  • BANFF selects Spain as 2026 Country of Honour

    Country of Honours

We're proud to announce that Spain will be the Country of Honour at the 2026 Banff World Media Festival, recognizing the country's growing global influence in premium content production, international co-production, and creative innovation.

As the second nation to receive this distinction — following South Korea in 2025 — Spain will be celebrated throughout the festival with dedicated programming, curated events, and high-profile networking opportunities highlighting its dynamic audiovisual ecosystem across scripted, unscripted, film, and digital storytelling.

A distinguished delegation of Spanish producers, creators, executives, and talent will join global industry leaders in Banff to spark new partnerships and international collaborations. Spain will also be recognized during the Rockie Awards on June 16, honouring outstanding global content and talent.

With internationally acclaimed series like Berlin, The Asunta Case, and Valeria, and the Rockie Award–winning La mesías, Spain has emerged as one of the world's most exciting production markets — supported by world-class locations, strong investment, and a thriving creative community.

"Spain's rise has been one of the most consequential shifts in the global content landscape. From breakout franchises to award-winning prestige drama, Spanish producers are setting the pace for international co-production and premium storytelling," said Jenn Kuzmyk, BANFF's Executive Director. "As our 2026 Country of Honour, Spain brings both creative firepower and serious deal-making momentum, and we look forward to welcoming the delegation to Canada in June."

"It is a true honour for Spain to be named Country of Honour at BANFF. This recognition highlights the strength and ambition of our audiovisual industry, and we look forward to deepening and expanding the collaboration between Spain and Canada in the years ahead," said Luis Mayoral, Creative Industries Director at ICEX.

We look forward to welcoming Spain — and the global media industry — to Banff this June.

Originally launched in 2018, Diversity of Voices has helped to take down barriers at scale, providing nearly 800 opportunities to Black, Indigenous and People of Colour Canadian producers and creatives. To date, the program has played a vital role in supporting mainly emerging and early-career Canadian writers, directors and producers from racialized communities. As the program and its alumni have matured, BANFF and DOV partners identified a critical next gap: ensuring diverse producers and creators at established levels have opportunities to advance their companies and projects on a national and global level. This year's cohort will be provided with an amplified experience, including enhanced financial support alongside a significantly expanded marketing, promotional, PR, podcast and brand-building campaign designed to raise their profile across the Canadian and global media industry.

"Over the past eight years, Diversity of Voices has helped cultivate an extraordinary pipeline of talent, and I know firsthand the difference that nuanced and tangible support makes. With Elevate, we've poured that insight into a new direction, ensuring producers and creatives of colour don't just enter the industry, but have sustainable careers within it. We are building in togetherness and ensuring there are always seats ready at the highest levels. This format allows us to champion our participants via a concerted marketing campaign, strategic visibility, and celebrating the recognition they've earned, helping them reach the next defining milestone in their careers."
Vanessa Mitchell, Producer, Fellowship Programs at the Banff World Media Festival
