Elle Johnson

Co-Showrunner, Executive Producer and Writer, Self Made: Inspired by the Life of Madam CJ Walker (Netflix)

Elle Johnson is a writer, producer and showrunner. Most recently, she served as a co-showrunner on Netflix’s limited series SELF MADE: INSPIRED BY THE LIFE OF MADAM CJ WALKER starring/ produced by Octavia Spencer. The four-part limited series, which follows the legendary entrepreneur’s unprecedented success story, debuted in March 2020.

In addition, Johnson is an Executive Producer and writer on the Amazon original series BOSCH, based on the Michael Connelly detective novels. The seventh and final season of BOSCH will be released in 2021. She has also written for/produced various shows, such as CSI: MIAMI, LAW & ORDER, GHOST WHISPERER, SAVING GRACE, THE GLADES, FINDING CARTER, and THE FOSTERS.

Originally from Queens, NY Elle graduated from Harvard College and studied writing on a Rotary Scholarship at the University of East Anglia in Norwich, England. Her writing has been heavily influenced by growing up in a law enforcement family. Her father served as a Parole Officer in Manhattan and her uncle was a Homicide Detective with the NYPD. The spec Elle wrote about her uncle’s most important homicide investigation – the murder of his own 16-year old daughter– was her entrée into the world of writing TV police dramas. Since then, Elle has written many of her family’s law enforcement stories into episodes of television in dramas such as HOMICIDE, LAW &ORDER, and CSI: MIAMI. One of the highlights of Elle’s career cameon A&E’s scripted detective series THE GLADES where she researched, wrote, and produced an episode set in the world of NASCAR.

Elle has also written for a number of character- driven television series, such as Lifetime’s critically acclaimed civil rights drama ANY DAY NOW, CBS’s GHOST WHISPERER, TNT’s SAVING GRACE, and Freeform’s groundbreaking series THE FOSTERS. Elle recently sold a memoir, THE OFFICER’S DAUGHTER, to Sara Nelson at HarperCollins. The Officer's Daughter is about her cousin’s murder and is the story of a family, a terrible tragedy, and the power--and ultimately the freedom--of forgiveness. The memoir will be released in February 2021.
