Actor, Producer

James, a native of Canada, has had the honor of portraying several real-life figures in African American history. As Olympic hero Jesse Owens in “Race,” and as John Lewis in “Selma.” Stephan received a Golden Globe nomination for his starring role opposite Julia Roberts in Prime’s hit series “Homecoming” and an Emmy nomination for his starring role in Antione Fuqua’s “#FreeRayShawn.”

James also starred in Barry Jenkins’ acclaimed & nominated film, “If Beale Street Could Talk.” Other credits include starring in and executive producing two seasons of “Beacon 23” on MGM+, Apple TV’s thriller “Surface” and “21 Bridges” alongside Chadwick Boseman, among many others. In 2025, Stephan will star in the Sundance indie, “Ricky” and two Netflix titles; “Night Always Comes” alongside Vanessa Kirby and “War Machine.”

James co-founded the non-profit, The B.L.A.C.K. Academy with the goal of creating opportunities for aspiring Canadian artists of color as well as The Legacy Awards, an annual televised award ceremony celebrating Canada’s best and brightest artists of color.

At the Banff Media Festival, we met with Netflix and took a ride up Sulphur Mountain on the gondola. That’s where we made the pitch.
