Tom Hern

Executive Producer/Showrunner, The Panthers

4 Knights Film

Hern has produced six feature films and has another in post-production. He recently co-created and co-directed his first drama series, The Panthers; a nominee for Best Limited Series at the 2022 Banff Rockie Awards.

After starting out as an actor and starring in numerous series as a teenager; Hern broke onto the international scene as a producer with The Dark Horse; a gritty-based-on-a-true-story-drama, directed by his friend, James Napier Robertson. The film launched at TIFF to glowing reviews and sales to all major territories around the world, eventually garnering Oscar-buzz around Cliff Curtis's transformative performance. TDH won a number of awards at top-tier film festivals (including Audience Award-wins at the Rotterdam, San Francisco, Seattle, and Palm Springs International Film Festivals) and was a Box Office smash in its home territory.

Later Hern produced the high-octane action-comedy, Guns Akimbo (starring Samara Weaving and Daniel Radcliffe) which launched at the TIFF in 2019, and the madly-gripping action-horror, Shadow in the Cloud (starring Chloë Grace Moretz and directed by Roseanne Liang), which won the TIFF Midnight Madness Award in 2020.

Hern sat on the International Jury for the Berlin International Film Festival (Generation Section) in 2015 and won the pitching prize at the MIFF 37 Degrees South market in Melbourne in 2016. Hern also won the Moa-award for "Best Film" at the 2014 New Zealand Film Awards for The Dark Horse (that same year, he was a dual nominee, also getting a nod for Everything We Loved).

Hern is a principal of two companies; Four Knights Film, alongside writer/director, James Napier Robertson, and Tavake, alongside writer/producer, Halaifonua Finau.

Speaking on: Meet a Showrunner + Director; Meet a Showrunner + Director

At the Banff Media Festival, we met with Netflix and took a ride up Sulphur Mountain on the gondola. That’s where we made the pitch.
