Speaker Nisha Platzer
Nisha Platzer is a queer director and experimental filmmaker living and working on the unceded traditional territories of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh peoples. Her films meld sounds and imagery that you can dream and drown in, while exploring a wide range of themes spanning disability, queerness and youth, to topics of grief and healing.
Nisha studied at the renowned Escuela Internacional de Cine y Televisión (EICTV) in Cuba and her work has been supported by Telefilm, Canada Council for the Arts, the BC Arts Council, TVO, Knowledge Network and the National Film Board of Canada. Nisha’s first feature documentary, Back Home, was supported by the Talent Fund and presented at the Docs-in-Progress Canadian Showcase at Cannes. It was awarded Best Artistic Documentary at the 40th Bogotá Film Festival, and the top prize at Veracruz Film Festival.
Her short, Vaivén (2020) won best film at aluCine Latin Film Festival and competed worldwide at Raindance, Festival Nouveau Cinéma, FIDBA, Ji.hlava IDFF, among others. A member of the Directors Guild of Canada and Iris Film Collective, Nisha is currently adapting a beloved Canadian novel for the screen.
