Erin Underhill is President of Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group (USG), where she oversees all aspects—creative affairs, casting, production and more—of one of the most successful television studios in the world. She  reports directly to Pearlena Igbokwe, Chairman, USG.

With Underhill at the helm, Universal Television currently produces more than 50 primetime comedies and dramas for a variety of broadcast, cable and streaming platforms. Acclaimed series produced by Universal Television include Dick Wolf’s enormously successful Law & Order, Chicago and FBI-branded series, Hacks, The Best Man: The Final Chapters, The Gilded Age, Never Have I Ever, The Equalizer, Young Rock, Quantum Leap, Girls5eva, Schmigadoon!, Harlem and Bel-Air.

Over the years, Underhill has shepherded many critically acclaimed and popular drama series, including ERThe West WingAmerican Dreams, Friday Night Lights, Parenthood, Bates Motel, The Bold Type, Good Girls and New Amsterdam. She has also attracted top creative talent to the studio, including Julie Plec, Jenna Bans, Lisa Cullen, Mike Daniels, David Frankel, Dean Georgaris, Martin Gero, Jessica Goldberg, Bill Krebs, Nahnatchka Khan, Larry Wilmore, Amber Ruffin, Justin Spitzer and Carla Banks-Waddles.  

Prior to her current role, Underhill headed Universal Television’s drama development department as Executive Vice President and was previously Senior Vice President, Drama. Before that, she was Senior Vice President, Current Programming for NBC and Universal Media Studios (renamed Universal Television) and was responsible for creative oversight of drama series such as Heroes, Southland, Parenthood, and Chicago Fire among many others.

On the network side, Underhill, who began her career as an Associate in NBC’s Drama Development department in 2000, was previously Vice President of Drama Development and Vice President of Current Series at NBC.

Underhill resides with her family in Los Angeles and is a graduate of UCLA.

At the Banff Media Festival, we met with Netflix and took a ride up Sulphur Mountain on the gondola. That’s where we made the pitch.
